" The Healing Power of Music" 2012 National Convention Song of Atlanta Show Chorus to Perform at Convention A tradition at each SAI triennial convention is the SAI Philanthropies Benefit Concert. The 2012 Convention will feature an exciting Saturday night concert by the Song of Atlanta Show Chorus. The Song of Atlanta Show Chorus performances stretch from their community to international conventions. In August, they'll be able to reach both ends of the spectrum when they perform at the 2012 SAI National Convention in Atlanta. In addition to sharing music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of a cappella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. The chorus enjoys membership in Sweet Adelines, International, a worldwide non-profit Regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories are invited to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. The chorus is very proud to be 14-time regional champions. The mission of Song of Atlanta Show Chorus is to provide all women the opportunity to develop artistic skills through vocal production, showmanship and dance instruction, to demonstrate their artistic excellence by participation in regional and international barbershop competitions, and to enrich and organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, based in Tulsa. The chrous is part of "The Heart of Dixie Region" in Region 23 encompassing Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, most of Tennessee, and the panhandle of Florida. In the spring of every year, the Song of Atlanta Show Chorus participates in the Region 23 chorus competition in Chattanooga. The winners of the educate the community, through performances, about a cappella music in the barbershop style. The shelter's first location was the basement of Atlanta First United Methodist Church. Over the years, the shelter has relocated four times and its services and programs have expanded in response to the needs of a growing homeless population. In 2008, the shelter's staff, Board of Directors, and many supporters celebrated the extraordinary life of Mrs. Ruth Schnatmeier, the shelter's long-time Executive Director, by dedicating its current building at 655 Ethel Street to her just a few months before she passed away. The shelter's services include access to critical needs, computer training, children & youth programs, and educational programs. In 2009 the shelter served approximately 5,000 women and children at a rate of 150-250 individuals entering the doors each day. The shelter's mission is to ease the burden of homelessness for women and children and to assist in establishing self-sufficiency by providing comprehensive education and supportive services in a manner that respects human dignity. It seeks to spread the love of Christ to the needy for the glory of God. The shelter is an ecumenical ministry that crosses denominational lines in order to show God's love in a tangible way. The Atlanta Day Shelter's Board of Directors provides oversight to ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively. The Board leads long-term planning and its members are among the Shelter's most active volunteers, serving on numerous committees and representing the Shelter throughout the community. sai-national.org SPRING 2012 PAN PIPES 11
