National convention IAMA Composer/Judges Announced Every three years, the cycle for accepting compositions for the Inter-American Music Awards competition starts anew. Working with C.F. Peters Corporation and SAI National President Liz Nordling, SAI Philanthropies Inc. determined that the composition should be "for strings with optional piano for up to 5 performers (string quartet, string trio, piano trio, piano quartet)." The winning composition will be featured at the 2012 National Convention in Atlanta. The commissioned works by the two Composer/Judges will also be premiered. SAI is proud to present these new compositions, which will be published by C.F. Peters Corporation. Linda Robbins Coleman SAI Member Laureate Linda Robbins Coleman is an internationally acclaimed composer especially in the areas of orchestra, chamber, and theatre music. A native of Des Moines, she graduated from Drake University where she was initiated with the Pi Chapter of SAI and later studied with the Greek National Theatre. From 1977-97 Coleman was Composerin-Residence for Drake Theatre, scoring thirtyfive plays ranging from the ancient Greeks to the moderns. In 1991, she composed the film score for Iowa Public Television's awardwinning production of The Split Infinity. In 1994, she became the first Iowa woman to hold the position of Composer-in-Residence with any orchestra, serving with the Cedar Rapids Symphony from 1994-96 and again in 2001-02, and the Wartburg Community Symphony from 1994-97. Coleman has been recipient of more than 70 commissions ranging from chamber to symphonic music and from jazz to theatre and film. Her music has been performed and broadcast throughout North America and 6 PAN PIPES WINTER 2012 sai-national.org Europe by artists ranging from the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra to regional and local professional, community, and university ensembles and individuals. Her music is listed in the fifth edition of "Orchestral Music, A Handbook" by David Daniels, published by Scarecrow Press.   On May 16, 2008, Coleman was awarded Drake University's distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, an honor bestowed annually to one individual for outstanding achievement in a career or profession. In October 1999, Coleman was initiated as a Member Laureate by the Des Moines Alumnae Chapter. In 2000, Coleman was the eighth person to be inducted into the Hoover High School Hall of Fame in Des Moines. Other honors and awards include The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts American College Theatre Festival, the National Endowment for the Arts, American Music Center, Meet the Composer, Inc., WORLDFEST - The Houston International Film Festival, Arts Midwest, Iowa Arts Council, Minnesota Composers Forum, and Minnesota Arts Council. She is one of the few composers to receive two commissions from the Iowa Music Teacher's Association and the Music Teachers National Association, in 1994 and again in 1999. The latter was commissioned especially for The Ames Quartet.             In 1981, she founded the Friends of Drake Arts and worked with promotion and community outreach for fifteen years at the university. In 1987, Coleman co-founded the Iowa Composers Forum where she served as its chief administrator for ten years. As an educator, Coleman spent five years as a visiting artist teaching music composition at a magnet elementary school in Des Moines's inner city. She was on the Iowa Arts Council's Artist in the Schools/Communities roster for fifteen years and provided residencies in many Iowa communities. She has been performing since childhood, and has worked as a jazz and classical pianist and accompanist, including fifteen years on the Iowa Arts Council artist roster.             For 29 years, she served as research associate to Professor William S. E. Coleman, working on materials related to William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody and the 19th century Lakotas; the escape of the Danish Jews from Nazi persecution in 1943; and modern productions of ancient Greek plays by the Greek National Theatre. From 1988-2000, she served as coresearcher and copy editor for the book Voices of Wounded Knee that detailed the events and attitudes leading to the 1890 Massacre and the end of the Plains Indian Wars. Published by the University of Nebraska Press in 2000, it is considered the definitive book on this topic. It is currently available at bookstores and online.             For the past 36 years, she has been owner and president of Coleman Creative Services, working in music, promotion, marketing and publicity, desktop publishing, research, and consultation. She is a published poet and writer and has served as copy editor, historian, grantwriter, composer, educator, and coordinator on various projects for groups in the USA and abroad.             John Heins National Arts Associate John Heins's Neo-romantic compositions have garnered considerable praise over the past three decades. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and Europe. In Canada, his Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon was featured at the International DoubleReed Convention. In 1992, the Sinfonisches Blasorchester Bern featured his Overture for Band on their European Tour. Also in 2000, the Aulos Blasorchester performed and recorded the Overture in Switzerland. One of his commissions, Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble, was premiered in 2003 in Washington D.C. In 2004, the Metropolitan Wind Symphony in Boston premiered another commission, Second Essay. Also, in 2004, Ballet Nouveau Colorado premiered his new ballet entitled The House of Alba. His Ballade for orchestra was recorded and recently released on a CD of new American music recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic, Masterworks of the New Era, Vol.5.
