MUSIC MEDLEY Indiana Convention SAI Booth A Success By Dorothy Kittaka SAI Music Education Director T he early reports from SAI chapters that received SAI-NAfME (formerly known at MENC) State Music Convention Awards have been very positive. The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter spearheaded a booth that included participation by all chapters in the Beta B province. They ran a successful booth where they passed out SAI stickers, gave Hershey Kisses and Hugs, exchanged cards for people for future contact information, and handed out pamphlets provided by National Headquarters. They also T his is the second year that the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter has organized and carried out the running of a Beta Province SAI Booth at the IMEA (Indiana Music Educators Association) Convention at Fort Wayne's Grand Wayne Convention Center in January. We changed some things this year. • Instead of a red binder with yearbooks or membership lists and photos from other Beta Province chapters, I mounted photos and membership lists on a tri-fold display board for prominent and easy viewing. • The two yearbooks sent to us were displayed in a desk organizer. I also made a display board with photos and information about our Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter. • Our Zeta Psi Collegiate Chapter brought a tri-fold display with pictures of their members and activities. • SAI brochures were also displayed in two organizers, giving us more table space for other materials sent by National Headquarters (issues of Tempo! and PAN PIPES, address update forms, SAI jewelry and gift price lists and a small basket of Hershey's "Hugs and Kisses." • Last year we had visitors sign in with name and contact information in a notebook. This year I changed that to having them fill out small forms that asked for name, contact information, name of present chapter, and a check box for the unaffiliated and nonmembers. The idea of asking for the name of the present chapter and invited SAIs to a breakfast prepared by the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter the Saturday before the sessions began. Hot casseroles, bagels, muffins, fruit, coffee, hot chocolate and juice were provided while chapter member Diane Barton played beautiful piano music. They even sang some SAI songs before the ladies went to their sessions. Bagels and cream cheese and fruit were then brought to the booth for those who visited. Many SAIs and other curious people stopped by the booth, and students from two universities which do not have SAI chapters were interested in ways to start a new chapter. The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter members spoke to six SAIs who would like to affiliate with their chapter because of the booth. This is a wonderful way of bringing SAIs across the state together and finding new Alums. We encourage all SAI chapters to apply for the SAI State Convention grant, which awards half the cost of the booth fee. Please apply on the SAI national website: sai-national.org. It is most helpful to know the chapter or SAI status of a visitor. It makes it much easier to share the information with our other Beta Province chapters. Several of our chapters will now have leads on possible new members. Despite snowy weather, we had a good number of visitors at our booth. Two young women from Anderson wished aloud that their school had an SAI chapter, as well as two women from Indianapolis University in Indianapolis. Last year 37 women signed our guest book. This year 51 women signed our guest sign-in notes. — Ann Donner, Chairman, SAI Booth at the IMEA Convention sai-national.org WINTER 2012 PAN PIPES 3
