In 1973, he began work as a guide at Tanglewood, assisting with the information booth and  filling various backstage posts.  He was later invited to become assistant administrator of its music center, Ortner beginning a remarkable 23-year career with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Ortner became administrator of the center in 1984 and served the orchestra as assistant manager of the BSO Chamber Players, coordinator of the Chamber Music Prelude Concerts, director of the BSO Credit Union, and was involved in numerous other special projects including the design and construction of Ozawa Hall.  He has served as a panelist at the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, a speaker at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a frequent guest lecturer on music and education, including moderating the 2006 Harvard symposium on "Working with Bernstein."  He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Boston Arts Academy (of which he was chair for two years), on the Board of Overseers of the Handel & Haydn Society, the Board of Visitors of the Fenway Community Health Center, and the Planning Task Force for the Boston's New Center for Arts and Culture. He was appointed president of The Boston Conservatory in July 1998. Wayne Peterson Wayne Peterson was initiated by the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter in May 2008. The OrganistChoirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne, since 1987, Peterson has been active Peterson in the American Guild of Organists on both the state and local level. He is Founder and Director of the TrinityEast Side West Side Children's Choir and is a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians. His music has been published by H.W. Gray and FitzSimons, and he has appeared in concerts as an organist, harpsichordist, or pianist with the Lutheran Choir of Chicago, 44 PAN PIPES WINTER 2012 sai-national.org the Elkhart Symphony Chorus, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra, the York (PA) Symphony Orchestra, Eleganza Baroque Ensemble, and the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium. Joel A. Ross Joel A. Ross was initiated by the Rockford Alumnae Chapter in December. The initiation was formally announced at a Christmas concert of Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford, IL, that Ross conducted. Ross is a professional pianist, comfortable as a soloist or collaborator in all styles, and a composer/arranger. He is a magnum cum laude graduate of North Park University. Since 1988, he has served as Kantorei Ross Music director, which tours internationally. A four-tiered program of approximately 80 boys ages 7-18, Kantorei offers extensive training in vocal pedagogy and musical skills. A member of the American Choral Directors Association, he has served as the Illinois Chapter Repertoire and Standards Chair for Boychoirs since 1994, lending his expertise to conductors throughout the Midwest. Dr. Gail Sinclair Dr. Gail Sinclair was initiated by the Lambda Iota Chapter in October 2010. Dr. Sinclair is the Executive Director and Scholar in Residence of the Winter Park Institute at Rollins. Through the institute, she provides students opportunities to converse and collaborate with renowned music scholars and educators. Her support of the Lambda Iota Chapter includes approval of chapter fundraisers at institute events. She earned her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and her Doctorate from the University of South Florida. Her specializations include 19th and 20th century American literature, feminism, comparative women's literature, and film. Emmet Smith Emmet Smith was initiated by the Fort Worth Alumnae Chapter in November. Smith taught at Texas Christian University (TCU) as Herndon Professor of Pipe Organ for 45 years. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Southwestern College at Winfield, KS, and Master's of Music Degree from TCU, Smith with additional studies at Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music and National Conservatory in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar. Perhaps the greatest tribute to Emmet Smith as a teacher and musician is the plethora of online biographies of accomplished organists who proudly claim his tutelage. Greg Torres Greg Torres was initiated by the Theta Theta chapter in December. Torres is the Director of Bands at Nicholls State University. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Louisiana Tech University, Masters of Music Education from University of Oklahoma, and his Doctorate of Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. His professional experiences include all of the university bands, including Marching Torres Band, Symphonic Band, and also Basketball Pep Band in 1992-1993. He also is in charge of coordinating the music education curriculum, recruiting efforts, supervising student teachers, advising music majors, conducting, and methods. Outside Louisiana, Mr. Torres was Director of Bands at Moore Mid-High School in Oklahoma as well as the Assistant Director of Bands at Carroll High School in Texas. Dr. Al Travis Dr. Al Travis was initiated by the Fort Worth Alumnae Chapter in November. He served as Distinguished Professor of Organ and Department Chair at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1977 to 2011. In addition, he serves as Director of Music Ministry at Broadway Baptist Church where he has been the organist since 1978, playing the Rildia Bee O'Bryan Cliburn organ, named in honor of the SAI Friend of the Arts, mother of National Arts Associate Van Cliburn, a member of Broadway church. Dr. Travis served Travis as Regional Councilor for Region VII for the American Guild of Organists. He has published numerous choral and organ works, and has recorded several CDs. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, a Master's Degree from Syracuse University, and a Doctorate from the University of Michigan.
