SIGMA A S PIES, INC P . 4 SIGMA A S Region VII – Pontchartrain Alumnae Chapter, Alpha A Province The Midland Alumnae Chapter Category I - Chapters with 20 members or under Region V – Midland Alumnae Chapter, Alpha C Province he Midland Alumnae Chapter created two related programs for the Midland Public Schools which were in dire need for stringed instruments and cases to replace worn out school instrument cases. The first program is a "Cases for Kids" campaign in which the chapter purchased 11 new full-sized violin cases and applied for a string outreach grant from SAI Philanthropies to purchase an additional eleven violin cases. Second, The Great Lakes Bay Region Musical Instrument Recovery program utilized local newspapers and concert programs to encourage community members to donate their unused instruments to the Midland Public Schools. Instruments not needed for this program will be donated to People-to-People Project. The chapter has received four donations of instruments and will be receiving an additional four. This project will be ongoing and will expand as needed. Region VII – Richmond Alumnae Chapter, Iota B Province The Richmond Alumnae Chapter assisted the Richmond Symphony Orchestra's educational outreach program by providing members to run an instrument petting zoo and musical games before the orchestra's Lollipops series concerts. Members from area collegiate chapters (Gamma Kappa and Gamma Zeta) were also recruited to help in this endeavor. This provided a good working relationship between the chapters in the province and the premiere community group. It was also used as a recruitment tool for Patroness members to attend and see the presence of SAI in the community. The fall concert allowed the preschool and elementary-aged students to dress up for Halloween and explore the instruments. The spring concert, entitled" Green Eggs and Ham," included a young orchestra concert, instrument petting zoo, and arts and crafts. Category II - for chapters with 21 to 35 members Region I – East Bay Alumnae Chapter, Delta B Province embers of the East Bay Alumnae Chapter volunteered at the Oakland Public Conservatory, a not-for-profit music education program that provides scholarships for the purchase of music, private lessons, ensemble experience, and group musical instruction to high-risk youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. Chapter members spent several hours classifying donated sheet The Pontchartrain Alumnae Chapter presented a program to the children of BrightStars. BrightStars is a free, early-childhood program funded by grants and donations. The goal of the organization is to promote healthy relationships between parents and their children ages five and younger. Once a month they have "Family Music Night." In exchange for volunteer service, SAI receives a $150 honorarium from BrightStars that is then donated to a needy music organization of the chapter's choosing. Since this program was scheduled close to Valentine's Day, the chapter members made thirty Valentine's Day cards and sorted them into gift bags handed out to the children. As part of the program, the chapter wanted the children to participate musically on one of the songs, so the chapter provided egg shakers and gave them away as gifts. The songs that were chosen incorporated body movement and participation by the audience. After each instrument demonstration, the presenters asked for questions. The children have curious minds and most have never seen or heard these instruments live and up close – some were really surprised by the sounds they made. Several instruments were introduced, including flute, piccolo, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone horn, violin, guitar, and a Celtic harp. The show was a hit with the kids and the parents and the chapter received wonderful remarks from the Family Music Nights coordinator. Category III - for chapters with 36 or more members Region II – Oklahoma City Alumnae Chapter, Zeta B Province he University of Oklahoma Trombone Choir, conducted by Dr. Irvin L. Wagner, presented a benefit concert on April 11, 2010. The $700 raised was used to 1) help with purchasing uniforms for Silver Strings of Putnam City Schools; 2) purchase a keyboard for Rockwood Elementary in Oklahoma City; 3) provide funds for a Wilson Elementary (Oklahoma City) music teacher to take Orff training; and 4) purchase multicultural instruments for Fillmore Elementary (Oklahoma City). The chapter members were able to visit Rockwood and Fillmore Elementary Schools to see the donations in action. Region VIII – New York Alumnae Chapter, Phi B Province Since 1934, the New York Alumnae Chapter has presented annual benefit concerts to raise money for local, national, and international music-related charities while strengthening the chapter's commitment to supporting outstanding music and exceptional performers. Since its beginning, the concerts have grown to feature world-famous artists performing an exciting and challenging repertoire. This year's concert featured the internationally acclaimed pianist and recently honored SAI Member Laureate Dr. Emily White. The funds raised from this year's concert included Turtle Bay Music School, a local arts organization that requested funding for their Public School Music Outreach program. This Outreach program serves the needs of nearly 800 children (pre-kindergarten through fourth grade) in four New York City public schools. On the national level, the chapter made a monetary donation to the Bold Notes project of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. The international beneficiary was SAI Philanthropies' People-toPeople Project. sai-national.org FALL 2011 PAN PIPES 74 SIGM 19 P P 74 SIGM 19 RO IOTA IOTA HA LP 4 music and books by instrument and genre, as well as repairing broken donated instruments that could be salvaged.
