And it is later that, unfortunately for theology, saints were introverted and leaning down. It could give a dark image to the outside. My philosophy, I think, is closer to the middle ages in the understanding of arts related to faith. 4 Many of Hakim's organ works are generated by Gregorian chant. In an interview with Jacques Dhaussy, Hakim stated that Gregorian chant is one of his principal sources of inspiration, if not the main one.5 One of his chant-based works for organ is Mariales. Hakim composed Mariales in 1993 in memory of his teacher and friend Langlais, who died in 1991. He left the published score at the door of Langlais's apartment on the morning 10 of the second anniversary of Langlais's death, Ascension Day 1993.6 In Mariales, he has used themes that Langlais loved and had given to Naji to improvise on during lessons. Langlais and his students improvised often on Gregorian chants, especially Marian chants. Hakim played the premiere of Mariales at Lincoln Cathedral in England on June 21, 1993. Hakim provides the following information in the published score: Mariales is a set of five short pieces, each one built on a Gregorian theme. "Incantation," "Pastorale," "Antienne," "Hymne," and "Danse" paraphrase respectively the following chants: Mater admirabilis, Regina coeli, Salve Regina, Virgo Dei genitrix, and Ave maris stella. The general piano dynamic corresponds to the serene character of the suite.7 PAN PIPES SUMMER 2011 sai-national.org The first piece of Mariales, "Incantation," uses Mater admirabilis as a theme. Mater admirabilis, "Mother most admirable," is found in the Litany of Loreto, a litany in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The first movement of Jean Langlais's Offrande à Marie (1971) is also called "Mater admirabilis." Example one shows the Mater admirabilis chant and mm. 1-2 of "Incantation" which is the theme. The second piece, "Pastorale," is based on Regina coeli, the Marian antiphon that is sung at the end of Compline during the Easter season. Hakim sets the Regina coeli melody in the right hand and ornaments it with melodic filling-in at the beginning of the first phrase and at the end of the second and third phrases. Example two shows the Regina coeli chant and mm. 1-3 of "Pastorale." The third piece, "Antienne," (Antiphon) contains the Salve Regina chant played with the
