new organ works Example 5 solo compositions Chronological list of solo organ works by Naji Hakim as of May 2011 Ave maris stella, stanza 1 "Danse" from Mariales, Naji Hakim, mm. 1-9 flutes. Example three shows the Salve Regina chant and the beginning of "Antienne." The fourth piece, "Hymne," is based on Virgo Dei genitrix, which is sung at the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The form of "Hymne" is ABA with four measures in each A section and seven measures in the B section. The seven measures of the B section correspond to the seven phrases of the Virgo Dei genitrix chant. The chant is played by the right hand. The pedal is silent except for the B section where it has an E and B drone. Example four shows the Virgo Dei genitrix chant and the beginning of the B section of "Hymne." The final piece, "Danse," is based on the Gregorian hymn Ave maris stella. It has a sixteenth note ostinato played in the left hand. "Danse" begins with the ostinato, and the chant enters in the right hand in m. 5. The chant is fragmented in the soprano voice. Example f ive shows the Ave maris stella chant and mm. 1-9 of "Danse." As discussed in Hakim's book, The Improvisation Companion, the melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, and expressive characteristics of the themes help generate his works. The development of the theme(s) produces the form of the work, both when improvising and composing. The formal design of Hakim's Mariales is free form for "Incantation" and "Antienne," while the design of "Pastorale" is AB, "Hymne" is ABA, and "Danse" is AA'. Heather M.
