Dr. Daniel J. Schmidt Dr. Daniel J. Schmidt was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Delta Eta Chapter in April 2007. Dr. Schmidt is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Northern Arizona University. Prior to this appointment, he was director of bands and professor of saxophone and double reeds at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. College ensembles under his direction have received international reputations, touring Europe, performing at various conventions including the CBDNA Regional Conventions in 2002, 2006, and 2010 as well as a variety of state MENC conventions. The NAU Wind Symphony has made promotional recordings for Warner Bros. Music and Carl Fischer Music.  Prior to Dr. Schmidt's appointment at Mars Hill College, he was the associate director of bands at Syracuse University, directing the 230-piece "Pride of the Orange" marching band and various concert and pep bands.  Dr. Schmidt received the Bachelor's of Music Education degree from Florida State University and was appointed director of bands at Hudson High School in Pasco County, Florida in 1987.  He is the first person to receive the Master's in Wind Conducting from the University of North Texas while emphasizing saxophone performance and musicology (1993).  He is also the first person to receive the Doctorate in Wind Conducting from the University of Kentucky (2000).  Dr. Schmidt was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to Australia in 1993 but turned it down to join the Syracuse University faculty.  He has served as clinician and adjudicator throughout the country.  He is the Primary Conductor and Director of Scholarly Publications for Carl Fischer Music of New York.  He served as the coordinating editor for the recent series of band scores entitled Percy Grainger: The Critical Edition.  He is the author of My First Klosé, My First Wagner, My First Universal Method, My First Barrett, and My First Weissenborn, five intermediate lesson workbooks for woodwinds, and is the co-author of Protocol: A Guide to the Collegiate Audition Process for trumpet, clarinet, trombone, saxophone, and flute.  He is the conductor of the Trade Winds, a professional ensemble that creates promotional recordings of new music for Carl Fischer and Wingert-Jones.  Dr. Schmidt is also a performing artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America and is the Arizona State Chair and VicePresident of the Western Region for the College Band Directors National Association. Nancy Sullivan Nancy Sullivan was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Delta Eta Chapter in April 2007. A Senior Lecturer in French Horn at Northern Arizona University, Sullivan previously taught Music Theory, Music History, Brass Skills and Horn. She also continues to offer private instruction. She has been a member of the Atlanta Opera Orchestra, the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, the Arcadian Wind Quintet, the Save the Date Boston Philharmonic, Banff Opera Orchestra, and has performed with the Atlanta, Omaha, Portland, Madison, Columbus, and Mexico City Symphony Orchestras, in addition to touring as soloist with the New England Chamber Orchestra in Europe and Asia. Nancy has been a member of the New England Ragtime Ensemble and has performed with klezmer bands, blues bands, and jazz combos while freelancing in Seattle and Boston.  She is principal horn with the Flagstaff Symphony and has been a member of the Kokopelli Woodwind Quintet, the EldenBrass Quintet, and the NAU Faculty Chamber Players. She served as first substitute with the Phoenix and Tucson Symphonies, third horn with the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts Orchestra, and as third horn in the Arizona Opera Orchestra's productions of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle. She has been a performing artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America since 2000. She has provided master classes in addition to adjudicating competitions and auditions, including the 2006 inaugural SAI Women's Performance Competition. Sullivan earned a Bachelor's Degree in Horn Performance from the University of WisconsinMadison, where she studied with Douglas Hill and Madison Alumnae Chapter member Nancy Becknell. There she was awarded the John Barrows Memorial Horn Scholarship, and she received full scholarships to the Blossom Music Festival, Banff Festival of the Arts and the University of Wisconsin School of Music and New England Conservatory of Music. She received her Master's in Horn Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music where she worked with Gunther Schuller and Jean Rife. She received a performer's certificate in chamber music from the Banff Centre for the Arts Advanced Studies in Music and attended the Banff Summer Chamber Music program for five summers. the 2012 SAI National Convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Thursday evening, August 2, to noon Monday, August 6, 2012. 30 PAN PIPES SPRING 2011 sai-national.org
