RAYMOND WEIDNER NEWS: Raymond Weidner maintains a vigorous compositional schedule while serving as Director of Music and Organist at First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, Virginia. He was recently named a winner in the Greensboro North Carolina Chapter's (American Guild of Organists) search for new organ works in its up-coming publication, The Greensboro Collection which will be premiered at this summer's regional AGO convention. He has also composed four hymns (texts and tunes) for congregational use. The Sonata Capriccioso received its Lynchburg area premiere in a recital at Court Street Methodist Church in 10/10. Lunacy will be included on Mr. Levy's upcoming CD title New Moon. Received a commission from the Noble Obligé Ensemble for a new work shakuhachi, cello and koto, to be premiered in Tokyo on 11/10. Received a commission from koto virtuoso Erina Matsumura for a new work, to be recorded for her upcoming CD. Organized and hosted a weeklong Honolulu residency by AURA-J, one of Japan's premiere new music ensembles. The group, which performs new music for traditional Japanese instruments, played four concerts and gave numerous educational workshops for audiences ranging from schoolchildren to senior citizens. PREMIERES: Towa No Chigiri, for shakuhachi, flute, cello, koto, bass koto, and percussion by the Noble Obligé Ensemble in Tokyo. PERFORMANCES: After, a 34-minute double concerto for shakuhachi and koto, was performed in Tokyo's storied Suntory Hall by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, conducted by Maestro Kazuhiro Koizumi, with soloists Seizan Sakata (shakuhachi) and Reiko Kimura (koto). In its review, Ongaku no Tomo magazine declared it the "most rewarding piece" of the concert. Three Blues by the Triple Helix Piano Trio, in Boston. 3D, for alto saxophone and piano by Paul Bro and Marilyn Shrude at the World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok, Thailand. Strange Places to Be (shinobue, 2 shakuhachi, shamisen, biwa, percussion, 2 koto, bass koto) and Bend (shakuhachi, shamisen, koto) were both performed in Honolulu by Tokyo-based new music ensemble AURA-J, with the composer conducting the first work. Water (falls) by pianist Ron Levy in Philadelphia and Ridgewood, NJ. RECORDINGS: Walk Across the Surface of the Sun was released on Albany Records. The CD features eight of my works for violin, cello, piano, shakuhachi, koto and other Japanese instruments. SCOTT A. WYATT NEWS: Scott Wyatt continues to serve as director of the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios where he teaches composition. Professor Wyatt was also an invited speaker to present the Technology behind Risky Business at the 2010 SEAMUS national conference on April 10, 2010. Professor Wyatt will be the featured guest composer for the Ball State University New Music Festival on 2/24 – 2/26/11.
