The 2012 composer-judges are SAI Member Laureate Linda Robbins Coleman and National Arts Associate John Heins. This triennium's composition will be a piece for strings and optional piano, for up to five performers (trio, quartet, piano trio, piano quartet) that can be played by high-school students. Website: sai-national.org +++ Margaret Blackburn Biennial Composition Competition A $1,000 grand prize will be awarded to the female student composer who submits the winning musical composition in the 2011 Biennial Blackburn Memorial Composition Competition. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or graduate music program in the 2010-11 academic year. Compositions should be for a small ensemble of no less than two instruments, which may include voice, and no more than twelve instruments, including voice. Works for instruments and electronic sounds, digital media, CD, interactive compositions or works for electronic sounds alone can be included. Any composer, regardless of age or nationality, is eligible. Awards include a first-prize cash award of $1,000 and second-prize cash award of $500 plus performances by the University of Illinois New Music Ensemble in November of 2011 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Women composers based in the US are invited to submit an application for a commission to write a new work for women's voices to be premiered in New York City by Melodia Women's Choir, Cynthia Powell Artistic Director, in 2012. The winner will receive a $2,000 commission fee to compose a piece for the Choir and up to five (5) instruments, 8 to 12 minutes in length, which will premiere in 2012. Therefore, the next competition is limited to women composers. The winners will receive a public performance in New York City of their choral compositions by The New York Virtuoso Singers. Founded in 1988 by conductor Harold Rosenbaum, The New York Virtuoso Singers has become this country's leading exponent of contemporary choral music. All a cappella works for female chorus, and those with piano accompaniment may be submitted. If the text is not in the public domain, composers must submit a letter confirming that permission has been given from the author or poet to set the text to music. The Cantate Chamber Singers is a vocal chamber ensemble that performs throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area, under Music Director Gisele Becker. This is a biennial contest to award and possibly perform the original work of talented young composers 35 years old or younger. The contest seeks to encourage emerging composing talent from around the nation. Cantate's performances, often featuring acclaimed guest artists, are offered in smaller venues to create the greatest possible intimacy between performers and audience. The award is $1,000.
