Born in New York in 1929, he studied with Wallingford Riegger and EdgardVarèse. He held professorships at Northwestern, Yale, California State - Fullerton, and UCLA. Winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the same year he was Fromm Foundation Orchestral Composer at the 1973 Tanglewood Music Festival, he also received grants from the National Endowment for the arts, and his music was also nominated for the Pulitzer. Mr. Drew's music was known for its experimentalism, and he was co-founder and co-director of the Greywolf Performing Arts Institute. His students are mourning the loss of a great man and good friend. Famed avant-garde composer Milton Babbitt passed away at the age of 94. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University College of Arts and Science and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Princeton University. He taught at Princeton University from 1938 – 1984, becoming a professor emeritus of music upon his retirement. Milton Babbitt was particularly noted for his electronic and serial music, and was credited with developing the first electronic synthesizer. He was a prolific composer, with over 110 compositions. In 1982, the Pulitzer Prize board awarded a special citation to Milton Babbitt for his life's work as a distinguished and seminal American composer.
