JANE ELLEN • NEWS: At the February 2010 TMEA Convention in San Antonio, TX, I received a commission (currently in progress) from Guido Six the director of Claribel, a 32-member clarinet choir based in Oostende, Belgium. In September I received my 21st consecutive ASCAPlus Award. My latest CD, Following My Heart, has been featured on several websites, including Spains Reviews New Age.com, where Alejandro Clavijo gave it a 5/5. KC Café Radio (kccaferadio.com) chose three tracks from the album (Colours of My Life, Follow Your Heart, and Visions of the Past) as part of a special station promotion designed to attract new listeners. PERFORMANCES: Follow Your Heart by Maria Vesper at West Mesa High School in Albuquerque, NM on 2/10. Arrangements of The Opera Reel and Jenny Lind Polka written for period American Civil War brass band by the Albuquerque Territorial Brass directed by Ralph Harris for a re-enactment dance and gala on 3/10. WEBSITE: janeellen.com FRANK FELICE NEWS: Much of my last year has been spent writing a lot of chamber music and also building a composing/ recording/sound design studio -- this has now just been completed, and the first work to be completed in it is titled "In This Place," a work for solo double bass -- the idea for this piece came from composer Frank LaRocca, who wrote a piece for clarinet, violin and piano with this title -- in essence, this piece is a work of thanksgiving to God for the gift of such a magnificent place to create, practice and perform music. RECORDINGS: A new disc of piano music by living composers performed by pianist Kate Boyd has just been released -- it is titled "Music for the End of Winter" and is available from Ravello Records. This CD contains my work, Three Pieces From Banff, pieces that were all composed during a recent residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Additionally, I produced and mastered this recording. A new CD by violinist Davis Brooks that will be released in early 2011 will contain my violin and stereo recorded medium piece Brace Yourself Like A Man, based on the book of Job from the Old Testament. BRIAN FENNELLY NEWS: Fantasia Concertante (2009) for violin, cello, and orchestra is the winning piece of the 2009 Fauxharmonic Orchestra International Concerto Composition Competition. It will be performed with Duo Parnas, for whom it was written, at a concert and location to be announced. The recent Sheffield lab CD Gare du Nord featuring Duo Parnas in music of Gliere, Honegger, Martinu, Milhaud, and Fennelly fennelly ('Sigol' for Two) received a rave review on Gene Gaudette's classical music blog of May 30, 2010. Fennelly's The Other Side of Time (2009) for Winds, Brass, and Percussion was chosen by the League of Composers/ISCM as an official submission to the 2010 ISCM World Music Days in Croatia. PREMIERES: Skyscapes IV (mixed quintet of winds, strings and guitar) by Washington Square Ensemble conducted by Scott Voyles at Merkin Hall in New York, NY on 12/3/09. RECORDINGS: The New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Charles Peltz, conductor, has prepared a recording of The Other Side of Time (2009), a 16 minute piece for 30 winds, brass, and percussion commissioned by them, for release on an upcoming "portrait" CD of Fennelly's music by Albany Records. For the same CD, trumpeter Chris Gekker, with pianist Rita Sloan, has recorded Corollary III, the piece written for Mr. Gekker which won the 1990 International Trumpet Guild Composers Competition. WEBSITES: http://amc.net/BrianFennelly http://composers.com/brian-fennelly CHARLES FITTS PREMIERES: The composer's two-act opera, Amontillado, will begin rehearsals in October, 2010 for its premiere performance by Theatre Victoria in the new Wilder Center for the Performing Arts in Victoria, Texas. The opera fitts is loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story, The Cask of Amontillado and will be performed with orchestra and a cast of three. Stage direction and lighting will be provided by the staff of the Wilder Center. The opera will receive two performances during 1/11. PERFORMANCES: Kyrie and Gloria for Chorus and Orchestra by Montgomery County Choral Society directed by Ann Lee on 4/23/10.
