DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE Jack Everly Jack Everly was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter in October. A North American leader in symphonic pops, Jack Everly is Principal Pops Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO). He is becoming widely known for his innovative approach to programs that have brought new audiences to the time-tested and beloved genre. During his tenure in Indianapolis, he has added positions as Principal Pops Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Principal Pops Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa, Canada. In the 201011 season, he is scheduled to appear as guest conductor with the Pittsburgh, Seattle, Dallas, Toronto, Detroit, and Milwaukee symphony orchestras. Everly is the Music Director of Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration. These theatrical symphonic holiday concerts are presented annually in December in Indianapolis and are seen by more than 40,000 concert-goers. Last season, Mr. Everly led the ISO in its first Pops recording, Yuletide Celebration, Volume One, which included three of his own arrangements. Originally appointed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, Everly was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, where he served as Music Director. In addition to his ABT tenure, he has teamed with Marvin Hamlisch in Broadway shows that Hamlisch scored, including The Goodbye Girl, They're Playing Our Song, and A Chorus Line. He conducted Carol Channing in Hello, Dolly! in two separate Broadway productions and Donald O'Connor in Show Boat. In television and film, Everly has appeared on In Performance at the White House and conducted the songs for Disney's animated classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He has been music director on numerous Broadway cast recordings, and conducted the critically praised, Everything's Coming Up Roses: The Complete Overtures of Broadway's Jule Styne. The 2006 album In the Presence features tenor Daniel Rodriguez with the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of Prague conducted by Mr. Everly. In 1998, Everly created the Symphonic Pops Consortium serving as Music Director. The Consortium, based in Indianapolis and made up of five orchestras, produces a new theatrical pops program of superior artistic quality each season. In the past seven years, more than 206 performances of SPC programs have taken place in 22 cities across the U.S. and Canada.  In May 2009, Everly received an honorary doctorate of arts from Franklin College in his home state of Indiana. National Women's Studies Association, the Composer's Forum, the International Conference on Women in Music, and the National Convention of the College Music Society. She has written books on the music of Ben Johnston, Pauline Oliveros, Lou Harrison, and Vivian Fine. The books about Johnston's and Harrison's music are detailed studies about the composers' use of just intonation, and the books about Oliveros and Fine contain analyses of their music and examine the issues of women composers. The Music of Vivian Fine received a 2000 American Society of Composers Artists, and Publishers (ASCAP) Deems Taylor Award. In addition, Von Gunden has published several compositions and contributed theoretical writings and analyses to the College Music Symposium, Neuland, Perspectives of New Music, and the International League of Women Composers Journal. Nan H. Washburn Nan H. Washburn was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Pontchartrain Alumnae Chapter in October. Beginning her 12th season as the Music Director of the Plymouth Symphony and her sixth season directing Orchestra Canton, also in Michigan, she took on the additional position as Artistic Director and Heidi C. von Gunden Heidi C. von Gunden was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Sigma Delta Chapter in March 2008. Ms. Von Gunden is a musicologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She held a previous position there as Assistant Professor of CompositionTheory. She received her Bachelor's of Music at California's Mount St. Mary's College, her Master's Degree in organ performance from California State University, and her Master's and Doctorate in composition and theory from the University of California, San Diego. She studied under American Composers Bureau member Kenneth Gaburo, among others.
