DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS friend of the arts Dr. Richard R. Anderson Dr. Richard R. Anderson was initiated by the Kansas City Alumnae Chapter in May. A magna cum laude graduate of Bethany College with a Bachelor's Degree in Oboe Performance and a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, he joined the President's Own United States Marine Band after graduation. Earning his Doctorate of Dental Science, he became a resident in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston. During that time, he performed with the Houston Civic Symphony. He held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1978 until his retirement in 2004. His family, including Alpha Alpha initiate Marylen Nelson Anderson, formed their own performing group including oboe, English horn, flute, piccolo, cello, string bass, bassoon, and vocals. For the past thirty years, Anderson has performed with the Kansas City Symphony and Civic Opera and Puccini Festival. Dr. Charles Enlow Dr. Charles Enlow was initiated by the Seattle Alumnae Chapter in January 2009. Richly praised throughout the United States and Europe, he has appeared frequently in the Pacific Northwest as a solo piano recitalist and with chamber music ensembles. Beginning piano studies at the age of ten, he went on to Julliard and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He earned his Master's Degree and Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. He has studied and coached with many master teachers including Honorary Member Rosina Lhevinne, National Arts Associate James Dick, and Yo-Yo Ma. From 1997, to 1998, he served as principal pianist and vocal coach with the Austrian American Mozart Academy in Salzburg. He taught at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas State University and is currently a member of the music faculty at Shoreline Community College where he teaches collaborative piano and vocal ensemble performance and co-directs the college's Opera Workshop. Dr. Wendy Faughn Dr. Wendy Faughn was initiated by the Theta Beta Chapter in November. As Assistant Professor at Jacksonville State University (JSU), she teaches studio piano, class piano, music history, and accompaniment. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where she studied with Beta Xi initiate Heather Coltman and was the first music student to complete both the academic and performance honors programs. She completed her Master's and Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of South North Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education before receiving a Master's in Trumpet Performance at Kent State University and a Doctorate in Wind Conducting at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Carolina (USC). Her choral experience includes accompanying the choirs of JSU, USC, FAU, and the Catholic Choir of South Florida. She has worked extensively with vocalists from the South Carolina Opera Theater, Newberry Opera of South Carolina, Opera Carolina, and Studio Lirico in Cortona, Italy. She served as musical director for several productions with the Town Theater of Columbia, SC, and Little Palm Children's Theater of Boca Raton, FL. She serves as Faculty Senator for JUS and directs the series Musical at the Museum as the Cultural Enrichment Chairperson for the Anniston Museum of Natural History. Dr. Peter Griffin Dr. Peter Griffin was initiated by the Sigma Delta Chapter in March 2008. He became Assistant Director of Bands at Illinois in 1994 after having served in that capacity at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Wisconsin, Dr. Griffin conducted one of its concert bands, was Assistant Director of the marching and Varsity bands, and taught in the School of Music. In addition to his conducting responsibilities at the University of Illinois, Dr. Griffin teaches conducting and marching band procedures in the School of Music. He was the coordinator of the Illini Marching Band Festival and the Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival from 1994-2006. He also served as head clinician and co-director of the Smith-Walbridge Drum Major Clinics from 1993-2005, and has served as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator across the state of Illinois and throughout the United States. Dr. W. Michael Parkinson Dr. W. Michael Parkinson was initiated by the Sigma Beta Chapter in November. The Director of the School of Music at Ohio University, he directs the OU jazz combos and performs with Jazz Spoken Here, a professional quintet. He most recently served as chair of the Webster University Department of Music in St. Louis, where he directed the Big Band and "Mini" Big Band and performed with the faculty jazz ensemble and brass quintet, the Paul DeMarinis Quartet, Parkinson and the Trinity Jazz Ensemble.  Previously he served on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University, Furman University, and the University of MissouriKansas City.  For ten years, he served as director of the International Summer Jazz Academy in Poland. He graduated from the University of Carol Lynn Roseberry Carol Lynn Roseberry was initiated by the Kappa Tau Chapter in January. She currently serves as the chair of the Vocal Department at Capital University. Roseberry previously served on the vocal faculties of Luther College, Indiana University at Bloomington, and the Indiana University and Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI). She was a former director of Choral and Vocal Activities at both the Ohio State University and Otterbein College. Among performances with the Columbus Symphony Opera and the Dorian Opera, Professor Roseberry has performed on four Grammy awardwinning recordings with the Chicago Symphony Roseberry Orchestra. Dr. Andrew Trachsel Dr. Andrew Trachsel was initiated by the Sigma Beta Chapter in November. He serves as Director of Bands at Ohio University, teaches courses in wind literature in addition to graduate and undergraduate conducting, and conducts the Wind Ensemble, University Concert Band, and the "Under the Elms" Summer Concert Series. Dr. Trachsel received his Bachelor's of Music Education degree from Drake University and a Master's of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts, both in wind conducting, from the University of North Texas. He is published in four volumes of Teaching Music Through Performance in Band as the author of nine teacher's resource guides. Active throughout North America as a guest conductor, clinician, and recording producer, he holds professional or Trachsel honorary memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, MENC: The National Association for Music Education, Ohio Music Education Association, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of America, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority. sai-national.org WINTER 2011 PAN PIPES 43
