Each month, the "Note-Ables" hosts a Family Music Group. Our members have helped lead the group in various musical activities. A fundraising dinner and dance was held in February, 2010. Our members helped before, during, and after this event. Members have also donated music CD's and music to this organization. The Executive Director, Manal Toppozada, is a patroness member of the alumnae chapter. C ategory I I for chapters with 21 to 35 members L afay ette Alum nae Chapt e r Omega A Province, Region II The Lafayette Alumnae Chapter sponsored the "Bach and Blues" annual concert which features students from all area music teachers. The event is organized by SAI Esther Tyree and open to the public. Although the primary focus is on the music of J.S. Bach, the angle changes each year. With the assistance of organist John Moore, the program features students from all area music teachers who wish to participate. This concert gives the chapter excellent visibility within the local community, while providing a performance opportunity for the students. The annual concert features a local musician and highlights the commonalities of a specific genre. The program is educational as well as entertaining for everyone in the audience. This year, Mr. Moore gave the audience a close-up experience of the pipe organ and its complexities through a lecture demonstration of a Bach organ work. Volu s ia County Alum nae Chapter Lambda C Province, Region VI Music Make Miracles – a two-part service project sponsored by the Volusia County Alumnae Chapter – consisted of an Instrument Petting Zoo and an open rehearsal of the Stetson University Orchestra. This project was the result of many discussions concerning the lack of local musical activities and events for families with small children. The event was held at Stetson University and string, brass, and woodwind instruments were provided at no cost by DeLand Discount Music. The instrument demonstrators were members of the Eta Pi Chapter, as well as community professionals who are not SAI members. Despite an advertising budget of zero dollars, almost 100 students participated in this part of the event. Attendees of the Instrument Petting Zoo were invited to attend the open orchestra rehearsal of the Stetson Orchestra. The students all sat in the balcony of the performance hall in order to have a clear view of the orchestra. The conductor, Anthony Hose, held a short information session with the students before the rehearsal began. Almost forty children attend this event. The VCAC has found this project to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding projects in which they have participated. H a mpton Road s Alum nae Chapter Iota B Province, Region VIII The Hampton Roads Alumnae Chapter participated in "The Artist in You" program hosted by the local Girl Scout Council. The chapter's contribution was to teach the girl scouts about music and dance. There were 22 PAN PIPES FALL 2010sai-national.org three rooms that the sixty girls (age range 6-14) rotated through every 25 minutes. Room 1 was the dance room where the girls learned an age appropriate dance from around the world. These dances were performed later for their parents at the end of the event. In Room 2, the girls made their own instruments out of various household items, and each group made an instrument that was inspired by a real musical instrument. In Room 3 the girls touched and played over fifteen different instruments representing all four instruments families. The girls and SAIs alike thoroughly enjoyed the program and the opportunity to explore music in new and exciting ways. The event was a success and the Girl Scout Council has asked the chapter to come back and help with this program again in the future. Category III for chapters with 36 or more members Tul sa Alu mna e Chapt er Zeta A Province, Region II The Tulsa Alumnae Chapter hosted a ticket booth for Tulsa International Mayfest, a large four day arts festival sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. A total of 176 hours were donated by alumnae members, a member of the Patroness Chapter, an International Honorary member, a National Arts Associate, Zeta A Province Officer, several members of the local Sigma Gamma Collegiate Chapter, University of Tulsa School of Music Director, and several spouses, family members and friends recruited by the Tulsa Alumnae Chapter. Of the eighteen active alumnae, sixteen participated in this project. The booth was prominently located and posters promoting Sigma Alpha Iota were posted on each side. The group was also mentioned in the Mayfest brochure. The Alumnae Chapter achieved 99.625% accuracy in its ticket sales, even with two days of hard rain – and received $2,000 from the Mayfest Committee in recognition of this achievement. The funds received were used for collegiate music scholarships, funds to support sending a non-delegate from the Sigma Gamma Collegiate Chapter to National Convention, and other service projects. Des Moin es Alu mna e Chapt er Xi B Province, Region III The goal of this year's service project was to provide funding and instruments for the Des Moines Public School System. Due to increasing budget cuts, the music program has zero funding for the music programs in the school district. At the start of the 2009-2010 school year, there were roughly 100 students on the waiting list to receive instruments. It was the chapter's goal to help these students have a chance to participate in the music programs and to promote awareness in the community of the current situation in the local schools. As a result, the Alumnae Chapter partnered with Barnes and Noble to host a Book Fair and Instrument Donation. The purpose of the Book Fair was threefold: First - to hold an instrument drive to collect instruments for the schools; Second - to bring people into the store and make purchases with a portion of every sale benefitting the Public Schools; Third - to promote music in both the schools and our community. A large number of chapter members, local school and community musicians performed from noon until 4 p.m. at Barnes and Noble. This provided musical entertainment and gave a face to the cause being promoting. Performing groups included: Pi Collegiate chapter, Hoover High School ensembles, piano students from private studios, Pan's Pipes Flute Quartet and the Singing Grannies. The results of the day far exceeded the chapter's expectations. A total of 63 instruments were collected. In addition $1,063 was raised which was donated to the school district to buy music, pay for instrument repair, or buy other supplies as needed for the program. The day was a huge success and the chapter hopes to continue with similar programs in the future to benefit the local music programs.
