PAN PIPES SummER 2014 Sai-natiOnal.ORg 22 hector guzMan Hector Guzman was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Dallas Alumnae Chapter in May. Maestro Guzman is Music Director of the Plano Symphony Orchestra, where he has served for 31 years, and also directs both the Irving Symphony and the San Angelo Symphony. He has been named Conductor Emeritus of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico, the first person so designated. A native of Mexico, Guzman is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and holds degrees from e University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University, where he won solo organ competitions. He won first prize in both the "Chamber Soloists" and "Manuel Ponce" competitions in Mexico and was the first Latin-American ever chosen as a finalist in France's "Grand Prix de Chartres," the world's most prestigious international organ competition. He has served as organist at several major churches in the Dallas area He has appeared as guest conductor with symphony orchestras throughout the world, including those in Poland, Japan, Italy, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. He has also conducted numerous opera presentations, and his performance of the opera Frida in 2007 was considered the best opera of the year by the Mexican press. He was winner of the "Seven Conductors-One Baton" International Conducting Competition in 2004. Guzman's many awards and honors include "Outstanding National Young Artist," "Golden Lyre,"and "Artistic Merit Medal" awards from his native Mexico. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Mozart Medal, the highest musical honor in Mexico, awarded by the Embassy of Austria and the Mozart Academy in Mexico City. He was included in the Outstanding Musicians of the 20 th Century magazine published by the International Biographical Centre in England. Most recently he received the 2012 "For the Love of Art" Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2012 "Man of the Year" award by New York-based Madison's Who's Who. dr. gayle sherwood Magee Dr. Gayle Sherwood Magee was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Sigma Delta Chapter in April. e Associate Professor of Musicology at the School of Music at the University of Illinois, Dr. Magee received her Bachelor's Degree at McMaster University and her Doctorate at Yale University. She specializes in teaching contemporary music, film music and American music. She is in the process of writing Music in the Films of Robert Altman: From M*A*S*H to Prairie Home Companion. In addition, she has written the books Charles Ives Reconsidered and the second edition of Charles Ives: A Research and Information Guide. Dr. Magee has also written multiple articles and chapters for several music journals. Some of these include "Songwriting, Advertising, and Mythmaking in the New Hollywood: e Case of Nashville (1975)" for Music and the Moving Image; "Rethinking Social Class and American Music" for Journal of the American Musicological Society; "Marketing the Voice: Opera, Film, and the Case of Robert Altman" for eatre Survey; "Robert Altman and the New Hollywood Musical" for e Sound of Musicals; and "Song, Genre, and Transatlantic Dialogue in Gosford Park" for Journal of the Society of American Music. Dr. Magee has served as the president of the Charles Ives Society since 2010. is organization gathers to edit and perform the composer's music. She has been involved in a movement to buy and preserve Charles Ives house in Connecticut. She, along with a group of music enthusiasts are hoping to create a place where composers, musicians and scholars can stay and celebrate the composer's memory (e Wall Street Journal 2012). Dr. Magee is the recipient of several grants including those from the American Musicological Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Sinfonia Foundation for Research in American Music. dr. JeFFrey Magee Dr. Jeffrey Magee was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Sigma Delta Chapter in April. e Director and Professor of Music and eatre of the School of Music at the University of Illinois, he received his Bachelor's Degrees at Oberlin College, his Master's at University of California at Berkeley, and his Doctorate at the University of Michigan. Before teaching at the University of Illinois, he taught at Indiana University and was the executive editor of the score study series Music of the United States of America at the University of Michigan. He became the Director of School of Music in 2013. He specializes in teaching about music in the United States such as jazz, musical theater, and popular song. Dr. Magee has written several award winning books including e Uncrowned King of swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz. is book received e Irving Lowens Award for Best Book in American Music from the society for American Music. It also received an award for excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections. He is also the author of Irving Berlin's American Musical eater. Dr. Magee has written many articles for several music journals. ese include the Journal of the American Musicological Society, American Music, Black Music Research Journal, Current Musicology, and Musical Quarterly. He has also written a chapter, titled "Ragtime and Early Jazz," for e Cambridge History of American Music. Dr. Magee is the editorial board member of the Journal of Musicology, Jazz Perspectives, and the Center for Black Music Research.
