2014 FRATERNITY AWARDS PAN PIPES FALL 2014 sAI-NATIONAL.ORg 20 The Alumnae Service Project Award is given annually based on the following: the type of service, defined as something for others, not a fundraiser to benefit the chapter; the percentage of chapter members involved in the project; the originality of the project; and the financial good standing of the chapter. Each national winner receives a certificate and a $100 prize. C a t e g o r y I I ( 2 1 - 3 5 M e M b e r s ) D e n v e r ( c O ) x i C , r e g i o n i On January 26, 2014, the chapter performed a benefit concert entitled "Not Everyone Can Whistle" with proceeds going to Denver's Mending Faces in support of their work with children with cle palates in the Philippines. Twelve chapter members, 8 Sigma Upsilon collegiate members, 1 patroness member, and 3 community musicians joined together in performance, planning, advertising, and ticket sales. e chapter was able to give $1,281 to the Mending Faces organization through the funds raised, and Mending Faces recognized SAI at their celebration event. e service to Mending Faces, the collegiality of SAI alumnae and collegiate members, and the classical concert experience made for a meaningful and memorable service project. Best of all is knowing that the children who benefit from the Mending Faces operations will have the gi of music now that they can whistle, enjoy singing, and perhaps, play musical instruments that they could not previously consider. n a s h v i l l e ( t n ) p s i B , r e g i o n v i i For the 2013-2014 year, the Nashville Alumnae kicked off the 3rd Annual Benefit Concert. We invited the collegiate chapters to participate again to make it a Psi B project. We pre-sold ticket for $5 and tickets at the door sold for $10. e concert took place at IT Creswell Arts Middle Magnet School, to which half of the proceeds from the concert were donated to their music department. e school is located in a low Income neighborhood and the parents are not very supporting or the music department. e proceeds from the concert help the chorale, strings, and band teachers purchase folders, music, Instruments, get instruments fixed, and/or other items needed for maintenance of the instruments. e concert was themed "A Salute to Disney." Psi B students from IT Creswell performed songs made popular by Disney movies. C a t e g o r y I I I ( 3 6 + M e M b e r s ) K a n s a s c i t y ( K s ) p i a , r e g i o n i i i On March 15, 2014 our chapter sponsored a Sensory Friendly Concert for people with autism spectrum disorders. e purpose of the concert was to provide high quality live music performances in a relaxed setting where those who are unable to sit still and quiet during a performance would be welcome. Following the concert, we provided a reception. About 50 people attended the performance, including families with a child/children with autism and residents of group homes. e concert was held in a church sanctuary with a large reception area adjacent to the sanctuary. Parents of the children expressed how much they appreciated having the opportunity to attend a live music performance without fear of being disruptive and having received such a warm welcome to the concert and reception. ey also enjoyed the high caliber of performers in the concert. e concert included a variety of vocalists, instrumentalists, and music of different styles. e concert was advertised in local newspapers and through social media, autism support groups, and several local school districts. p h i l a D e l p h i a ( p a ) C h i a , r e g i o n v i i i Realizing that many school music programs had severe budget cuts, the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter devised a broad-based program to reach out to schools in our area and expose the children to the variety of careers available in the field of music. Ten alumnae members participated, developing seminars and presentations to take to schools where SAIs are classroom teachers. e purpose of the visits was to explain how music is incorporated into lives and careers. SAI members gave performances and presentations on various music topics, including classical music careers, careers as music educators, opportunities in music administration, and the field of music business. Examples of programs given include: 1. Rheta Smith and Martha Frampton performing oboe/ bassoon duets for Pensville High School music classes, discussing performance careers and the discipline necessary to pursue this career 2. Paula Savastano, discussing music business, arts administration, and copyright law for Chester/Upland Stern Magnet High School students and West Avenue School students in the Gied Students Programs. 3. Ketti Muschler, singer, sharing with students in the Burlington County Schools about the training, education, and discipline necessary to have a career as a performer and as an educator. 4. Lauren Nicosia, Martha Frampton, and Rheta Smith performing Woodwind Trios (clarinet, bassoon, and oboe) for West Avenue Junior High School students, explaining what a performing career entails. Discussion also centered around the field of arts administration. CHANDLER continued from page 19
