SAI-NATIONAL.ORG SPRING 2015 PAN PIPES 13 Oen times, the People-to-People Project will learn of a needy program or school through contact with a fraternity sister. anks to Orlando Alumnae Chapter member Marilyn DuBrul, the P2P Project is currently working to fulfill a request from the Principal of St. Mary High School in Jamaica. A number of sisters and chapters are assisting to fill the request from Principal Lt. Col. Errol Johnson. anks to the organizational work of chapter Sergeant-at-Arms Clarie Santiago, the sisters of Delta Gamma at the University of Florida have already mailed a package to Jamaica containing 5 harmonicas, 5 sets of egg shakers, 3 valve oils, 2 packs of saxophone reeds, and 1 pack of clarinet reeds. ey also completed a fundraising project and money raised has been used to purchase additional materials to be sent to Jamaica. Two of the larger items requested by St. Mary High School have been purchased by the project and are awaiting shipment to Jamaica. Phi Mu Alpha member Don Banks , owner of Don Banks Music in Tampa, FL, acquired a djembe and conga for the P2P Project to purchase. ey will be shipped to Kingston, Jamaica, where they will be held until Lt. Col. Johnson can pick them up. KENYA El Sistema Kenya, Kawangware El Sistema Kenya is committed to creating positive social change and educating Kenya's underprivileged children and youth through classical music. During its inaugural year, ESK director Karis Crawford has received two shipments of violins and violas from P2P, offering their initial 50 students the chance to experience the joys and benefits of music. NIGERIA Jerry Gopep Independent musician and music teacher Jerry Gopep received a 12-string guitar that had been donated to P2P. It took many months and the collaborative work of many SAIs to get this shipment to Jerry in Lagos. Now he is writing music and has produced the first of many CDs to help support his teaching in Nigeria. As reported in the Spring 2012 PAN PIPES: Our music colleagues oen live in areas of the globe that pose interesting logistical challenges. is is the case with Jerry Gopep, an independent music teacher who lives in Nigeria's Plateau State. Jerry shares his love of music with students and adults by teaching at schools and churches throughout the country. However, he is unable to purchase instruments or music in Nigeria. e People-to-People Project has been able to send Jerry an alto sax and a 12-string guitar to support his music program. With a secure method of shipping having been established, the project will be able to continue to assist Jerry in his mission to bring music to all corners of his country. TANZANIA Arusha and Morogoro Two SAI sisters teaching in Tanzania requested assistance from P2P. Maria del Valle was the primary music teacher and coordinator of a creative arts department in a school in Arusha, starting a music program from scratch. She received Orff music education materials, books, and CDs. Christine Cumming was PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE At top left, Uganda's Joseph Kiwanuka created a health advocacy group started with donated keyboards.
