sai-national.org • FALL 2015 • PAN PIPES 41 2015 Fraternity Awards Category I (1-20 Members) Mu Alpha Grand Valley State University, Alpha B, Region V e Mu Alpha chapter hosted a 5 th annual collegiate a capella competition alongside their local public school district. e chapter coordinated many aspects of the event including the advertising, venue, sound system, lights, snacks, judges, and prizes. Half of the $5,000 raised went towards the Allendale Public School's music boosters to support their fine arts program, which includes scholarships for graduating seniors as well as scholarships for students to attend summer music camps. e chapter also used a portion of the funds to make a donation to SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Theta Gamma University of Texas at San Antonio, Kappa A, Region II e eta Gamma chapter participated in a program called Music & Memory at Morningside Ministries, a local memory care facility. is program is based on the concept that music, particularly songs that a person has a strong emotional connection to, has proven to help patients with Alzheimer's and dementia complete daily tasks, reduce agitation, and in many cases even spark memories of their loved ones. With the money raised by this project, the staff received training on how to select songs for residents to create a personalized play list along with several iPods. To raise the money, the chapter held an awareness musicale where a Music & Memory presentation was given and audience members were encouraged to donate. e chapter then got their university choir involved by performing a piece entitled "Alzheimer's Stories" at their annual concert. At this concert, eta Gamma arranged for a panel discussion to take place with representatives from both Morningside and the Alzheimer's Association who talked about the disease and the healing power of music. e chapter presented their $1000 donation at this concert. Category III (36+ members) Pi Drake University, Xi B, Region III e Pi chapter hosted their 1 st Annual SAI Run for Pie, a 3K race. e path for the race looped through and around campus and ended in front of a pie buffet prepared by the chapter members for the race participants. e pies consumed by the participants were donated by local restaurants, chapter members, and members from the local alumnae chapter. ere was a wide range of flavors from fruit to chocolate and everything in between. ere were nearly 150 participants in the run, comprised of chapter members, members of the local alumnae chapter, university students, faculty and staff, and residents of the local community. All proceeds from the event were donated to the SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Music erapy Fund. e chapter raised a total of $1,225. Collegiate Service Project Award National Outstanding Collegiate Treasurer Award Cassie Chin Iota Theta, University of North Texas, Kappa B, Region II Cassie Chin of the Iota eta chapter is a recipient of the 2015 National Outstanding Collegiate Treasurer Award. e chapter's nomination notes that Cassie started several fundraisers within the chapter during her term as chapter treasurer. Cassie has also overseen the chapter's selling of roses at campus concerts, with the proceeds going to SAI Philanthropies, Inc. In addition to her treasurer duties, she also developed the chapter's website. Chapter members noted that "Cassie has contributed to every single project the chapter has done, has always helped. She has made members more interested in fundraising!" With Cassie's support, the chapter's contribution to SAI Philanthropies, Inc. was $1,000 during the 2014- 2015 fraternity year. Cassie graduated in Spring 2015 with a degree in computer science. She has recently started her career working at Mountain View for Google. Theta Gamma presented Morningside Ministries with a $1,000 in April for their certification in Music & Memory.
