Haley Rudolph Bard College Conservatory Conductors Institute, providing the opportunity to study with world-class teachers of conducting, experiencing podium time, developing poise in positions of leadership, and challenging the conductor's knowledge of music to expand and grow. Summer Music Scholarship Winners 2015 Music Education Outreach Grant 2015 Sandee Wallace Tampa Alumnae, Lambda D, Region VI Nina Harris Exceptional Center in Pinellas Park, FL A member of the Tampa Alumnae Chapter, Sandee will use the $5000 award to purchase the "Soundbeam System" for her students and their project called "Creating Music rough Movement." e Soundbeam is a touch-free device that uses sensors to convert movements to music. e Nina Harris Exceptional Center is a school for students with intellectual disabilities, such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism. Sandee's students will be able to create music in a new and unrestrictive form, participate in a sound ensemble, and be able to communicate their feelings and energy through music. Katy Buis Raleigh/Durham Alumnae, Tau D, Region VI Cape Fear Middle School in Rocky Point, NC Katy is an active member of the Raleigh/Durham Alumnae Chapter and will be using the grant money to purchase low brass instruments — a tuba and a euphonium —for her school's band program. Due to the economic situation of many of her students and a previous lack of low brass instruments, there have not been many students who could study these instruments at Cape Fear Middle School. e purchase of new instruments will allow students to learn and practice more consistently, and the entire program will benefit. Stephannie Pinto Theta Nu initiate, Florida A & M University, Lambda B, Region VI Decker Middle School in Austin, TX An initiate of eta Nu Chapter, Stephannie will be using the $5000 grant to purchase thirty digital keyboards and a subscription to the Sight- Reading Factory online for her students to participate in "Freestyle Friday" activities. Students will be able to record and create their own compositions, as well as learn the fundamentals of music theory, sight-reading, and improvisation. e project will culminate in a CD produced and released by the students. Honoring the longtime focus Sigma Alpha Iota has given to music education, the Music Education Outreach Grant offers assistance to music programs in public schools, at any grade level, K-12. is grant may be applied for once every three years, and the total project cost may not exceed $5,000 to complete. To be eligible for this grant, an applicant must be an initiated member of SAI or be sponsored by an initiated member of SAI, the applying/sponsor- ing SAI must be in good financial standing with the fraternity, as well as be current with national fees.
