PAN PIPES • FALL 2017 • sai-national.org 24 SAI AWARDS 2017 FR ATERNIT Y T he eta Chapter at Washburn University is the 2016-2017 recipient of the Katherine Becker National Collegiate Chapter Achievement Award. e chapter worked to fulfill our National Objectives this year by bringing music to their Topeka, Kansas community is several ways. For children, they presented an instrumental petting zoo for the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club of America and organized a two-day music camp with local Girl Scout troops. In addition, they promoted American women composers on their campus by hosting SAI performer Judy Coder in a benefit concert for SAI Philanthropies, Inc. that resulted in a chapter donation of over $500. Lastly, they supported the Lawrence Alumnae Chapter's middle school festival and organized their own chapter middle school and small ensemble festival. e eta Chapter had an exceptional year using the National Objectives as their guide. ey excelled in performance, community service, and supporting SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Meryl Mantione, Faculty Advisor for the Iota Chi chapter, is the 2016-2017 recipient of the National Outstanding Advisor Award. Dr. Mantione joined the faculty at Ball State University in 2006 where she served as the Director of the School of Music from 2006-2010. She volunteered to become the advisor of the Iota Chi chapter in 2010. During her time as chapter advisor, Dr. Mantione has encouraged her own students to join SAI and hosted recruitment events for the chapter in her home. She attends at least one recruitment event each semester to get to know potential new members and to show her support as an advisor and fraternity alumna. She believes that the participation of the chapter in department activities is necessary for them to increase membership and promote our organization on their campus. In addition to her involvement with the collegiate chapter, Dr. Mantione, an initiate of Iota Alpha at Oklahoma State University, is currently the Vice President Membership of the Muncie Alumnae Chapter, demonstrating the continued leadership opportunities available in SAI beyond the collegiate level. Dr. Mantione remains an active performer appearing as a guest soloist and recitalist throughout the United States. is includes performing as a singer and accompanist in chapter ritual ceremonies and musicales. She demonstrates professionalism at all levels, from her communication with the chapter to her guidance on how members should act and speak to one another. Dr. Mantione personifies a lifelong commitment to SAI and the important role music plays within one's life and community.
