Winter 2020 24 PAN PIPES soloist. He has performed internationally and can be heard on eleven movie soundtracks, several commercials, and video games for the Xbox and Playstation. He has recorded classical works with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Pacific Chorale that were nominated for Grammy's. As well as being an educator, choral director, and an astounding musician, Dr. St. Marie is also a music therapist. He obtained Bachelor degrees from Loyola University in Music erapy and Voice, a Master of Music degree in Conducting Performance from California State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music from the University of Southern California with a minor in music history and concentration in instrumental conducting and sacred music. In 2010, he was appointed as Director of Choirs at LACHSA and serves as Director of Music at Irvine United Congregational Church and Vallejo Drive Seventh Day Adventist. Both of these church positions are lauded for their high-quality music programs. Dr. St. Marie served as Interim Director of Choral Activities at California State University, Los Angeles in 2010-11. He has been a feature presenter at both the California Music Education Association and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts Education Series, and he was recently appointed as Chair of the Research and Publications committee for the American Choral Directors Association. D R . M A R I A S A M P E N Dr. Maria Sampen was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Tacoma Alumnae Chapter in September. Dr. Sampen and her husband, Timothy Christie, both serve on the faculty of the University of Puget Sound and they oen perform together at concerts. Each enjoys a separate and vibrant career. Dr. Sampen is a Professor of Violin at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. She is renown soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, recording artist, and teacher. Her career includes engagements in concertos, concerts, and masterclasses in Europe, Asia, Canada, and throughout the United States. Maria Sampen's recent schedule includes solo recitals and masterclasses at the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu, China. In 2015 she performed Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and premiered David Glenn's Romantic Rhapsody on emes of Mozart with the Walla Walla Symphony. She had performances with the Turtle Island Quartet in Seattle, and was a featured chamber musician at the Icicle Creek Summer Chamber Music Institute and the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival. Dr. Sampen chairs the string department at the University of Puget Sound where she teaches violin, coaches chamber music, and directs the New Music Ensemble. She served on the faculty at the Brevard Music Festival and the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute. Sampen's students have won major awards with the MTNA Competition, the Tacoma Philharmonic Solo Competition, the American String Teacher Washington State Competition, and the Rockin' Fiddle Challenge. Sampen has been featured as a soloist on KING FM radio in Seattle. She has released recordings on AMP Records, Block M Records, and Perspectives in New Music/Open Space. She is currently preparing recordings of Georges Enesco's Sonata, Bela Bartok's Sonata No. 2, and Marilyn Shrude's Memorie di Luoghi. Dr. Sampen holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Rice University and was a fellow at Aspen and the Tangle wood Music Festival. Dr. Daniel Burdick Dr. Daniel Burdick was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Zeta Upsilon Chapter at Edinboro University in November. Dr. Burdick is a graduate of Boston University and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he studied music. Dr. Burdick has performed on tuba and euphonium with the Canadian Brass, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Keith Brion's New Sousa Band, and numerous professional brass quintets. Featured concerts have included appearances at the British Institute Library in Florence, Italy, the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen, Germany, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, and a series of 15 concerts at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. He was the Principal Tuba of the Boise (Idaho) Philharmonic and serves as the Principal Tuba of the Erie Chamber Orchestra. He has taught at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Kentucky at Lexington, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Dr. Burdick has served as the founder and co-chair of the Edinboro University President's Commission on the Status of LGBTQIA, co-faculty advisor to Edinboro University's gay/straight alliance, co-chair of Edinboro University Women's Studies Committee, and as a member of the Edinboro University President's Commission on the Status of Women. Dennis Chinn Dennis Chinn was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Kappa Gamma Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in October. Chinn resides in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, with his wife Maureen Chinn.
