PAN PIPES FALL 2014 sAI-NATIONAL.ORg 38 is a former member of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and has performed with numerous early music chamber ensembles. He is Professor of Music at Indiana State University, where he has been on the faculty since 1998, and teaches privately in the In- dianapolis and Terre Haute communities. His students have continued their education at some of the top universities and summer programs in the country. He received his Bachelor's of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music and his Master's of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music. He has coached extensively with members of the Cleve- land, Cavani, and Lydian String Quartets. julIe Gunn Dr. Julie Gunn was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Urbana Alumnae Chapter in September. Dr. Gunn is an Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching and Accompanying, as well as the Assistant Director of Development and Engage- ment for the School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. roughout her career, Dr. Gunn has made quite a name for herself performing as a soloist as well as with her husband, SAI National Arts Associate baritone Nathan Gunn, including acting as Music Direc- tor at eaterworks! in Palo Alto and as a coach/ accompanist at the Metropolitan Opera Young Artist Development Program. She has given more than thirty master classes across the country since 2001. Dr. Gunn has also been presented with various honors in the last seven years. She won the arts Culture and Entertainment Award for Creative Community Service in 2009 and has received grants for both travel and research from multiple organizations. Her chapter, "Collaborative Artists," is included in the Illinois Sampler, an anthology published by the University of Illinois. Dr. Gunn has been an important part of the arts community in Champaign-Urbana. She is a regular participant in the fine arts program at Countryside School in Champaign. She is a member of ABC61820, a non-profit organization developing performing arts spaces throughout downtown Champaign. In 2011, Dr. Gunn founded and served as director of the School of Music Academy, a preparatory program for gied pre-college students in the area. In 2013, she was named Assistant Director for Public Engagement and Development for the School of Music. Also in 2013, Dr. Gunn helped to develop the new Lyric eatre at Illinois program. Dr. Gunn received a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Dartmouth College and a Master's Degree and Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying at the University of Illinois. MICHael kInGan Dr. Michael Kingan was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Kappa Beta Chapter in September. Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Professor of Music Dr. Michael Kingan assumed the role of Director of Percussion Studies in 2003. He teaches applied percussion and directs the Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band. He held a similar position at Louisiana State University for seven years and at Texas Christian University for three years. He was also the percussion specialist at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, TX, for six years and high school band director in Harlingen, TX, for two. Dr. Kingan has freelanced as a drummer and percussionist in the Columbus, Cincinnati, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and Baton Rouge/New Orleans areas, performing on occasion with symphonies in all the cities mentioned. Recently, he recorded the "Concertino for Solo Percussion and Band" by Jack Stamp on the Keystone Wind Ensemble CD Grace & Glory, and "Pegasus" by Ben Wahlund accompanied by members of the IUP Percussion Ensemble. He has performed, toured, and recorded with the Atlantic Brass Quintet, the chamber group Pastiche, and the Keystone Winds. As a conductor, he led both the IUP and LSU Percussion Ensembles to Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) performances, including the "New Literature for Percussion Ensemble" session at the PASIC 2007 in Columbus. He has commissioned and premiered several new works by professional composers, IUP alumni, and students. e ensemble commercially released the CD Opus Pocus on the Klavier label in 2011. In Spring 2005, he created an extension of the Percussion Ensemble called Intensity, a percussion chamber ensemble which began performing an additional concert early each semester. He also initiated purchases of steel drums, and by 2007 the IUP Steel Band reached full instrumentation. He was awarded a Technology Fee Grant proposal, which funded and established the IUP Electronic Percussion Studio. A vast majority of his graduates have either secured a job in the music field or have received an assistantship to attend noted graduate music programs. Kingan's articles have been published in Percussive Notes, Teaching Music, NACWPI Journal, and Yamaha Education Packets. He is endorsed as an artist/clinician by the Yamaha Corporation of America and Innovative Percussion.
