sAI-NATIONAL.ORg FALL 2014 PAN PIPES 39 brIan a. luCe Dr. Brian A. Luce was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Alpha Beta Chapter in November 2010. Dr. Brian Luce is the Professor of Flute at e University of Arizona and a Yamaha Performing Artist. Dr. Luce has performed as principal flute of the Champaign-Urbana, Midland-Odessa, and Johnstown symphony orchestras. In addition, he has performed with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Bach Society, Dallas Wind Symphony, Keystone Wind Ensemble, and the Tucson Chamber Orchestra. As a solo artist, he has performed during the National Flute Association's New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, San Diego, Albuquerque, and Kansas City conventions. He has also performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Pacific Rim at music festivals sponsored by the British Flute Society, Shanghai International Exposition, Soka International Harp Festival, Arizona Flute Society, Tucson Flute Club, Texas Flute Society, Las Vegas Flute Club, Florida Flute Association, Mid-South Flute Society, and Flute Society of St. Louis. His performances have been broadcast throughout the U.S., and his recordings are recommended references by music education associations. His Music of the Superpowers: Sputnik, Spies, and the Space Race has been lauded by e American Record Guide. He has also made the premiere recording of Anthony Plog's "Concerto for Flute and Wind Ensemble" with the University of Arizona Wind Ensemble. His latest release with SAI Member Laureate Carrol McLaughlin, Allume, includes numerous premiere recordings of original works and transcriptions for flute and harp. He has given recitals and master classes throughout the U.S. and Europe. His articles on performance and pedagogy topics have appeared in Flute Talk Magazine, and his doctoral dissertation, Light from Behind the Iron Curtain: Style and Structure in Edison Denisov's Quatre Pièces pour flûte et piano, earned the 2001 Morgan Outstanding Dissertation Award from the University of North Texas. He has previously taught at universities in Illinois, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Hs is a prizewinner of the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, Myrna Brown Young Artist Competition, Mid-South Young Artist Competition, Kingsville International Young Artist Competition, and University of North Texas Concerto Competition. Dr. Luce serves as advisor for Alpha Beta chapter. WIllIaM MerrIll William Merrill was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Boston Alumnae Chapter in October. William Merrill is one of Boston's most highly respected collaborative pianist/coaches. He has worked with luminaries such as Helen Donath, Erie Mills, Eleanor Steber, and SAI Honorary Members Roberta Peters and Debo- rah Voigt. He has accompanied many eminent singers of international and national acclaim in recitals at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York and has appeared in virtually every major concert venue in the Boston area and throughout New England, including Jordan Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, the Goethe Institute, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Newport Music Festival. Farther afield, he has appeared at San Francisco's War Memorial Auditorium, the San Diego Art Museum with Community Concerts across the United States, and on CBS' Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt. Merrill studied at e Hartt School and Longy School of Music. Abroad, he has given concerts in Italy, Austria, Holland, Germany, and in Beijing and Shanghai as a guest of the Chinese government. His extensive professional affiliations include the Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boris Goldovsky Opera Institute, and the Opera Company of Boston. Merrill has served on the staff of New England Conservatory of Music, and faculties of the Brookline Music School, and the Longy School of Music. He has recorded for both Newport Classics and Pearl Records. Mary P. PautZ Mary P. Pautz was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Milwaukee Alumnae Chap- ter in September. Pautz is a nationally known music educa- tor, having taught music in Catholic Schools for 4 years, Milwaukee Public Schools for 18 years, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 10 years. She served on the Wisconsin Music Educa- tion Association board as a representative and as president-elect, president, and past president. She was the designer of the Arts in Community Education project with the Milwaukee Sym- phony which has been used as a model for many other orchestras. She also started the Wisconsin Listening Contest that is now sponsored under the WMEA. She was one of the authors of the Holt Rinehart Winston K-8 music series and has produced newsletters for music educators as well as writing articles for other publications. Aer retiring from her teaching at UWM and following the death of her husband, Pautz established the Richard R. and Mary P. Pautz Lifelong Learning Foundation that presents salon concerts in Wisconsin, and Florida. She has traveled to Haiti and worked with directors at schools on music for early childhood and primary grades.
