However, in less than a decade, Bernice built a community of musicians at a school that had no music program and a high drop-out rate. rough his leadership and determination, the 1,700-student school now has more than 500 band members; many of who had never played a musical instrument before. Among the accolades that Bernice has earned are the Pioneer Valley Distinguished Teaching Award, the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award, and the New England Public Radio Arts and Humanities Award. In 2013, he was the subject of a University of Massachusetts research study on transformative urban teaching and was a quarter finalist for the first annual Grammy Music Educator Award. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Massachusetts Music Educators Association, the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association, and served on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Arts Education Advisory Council. Chun-Ming (Jimmy) Chen Chun-Ming (Jimmy) Chen was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Beta Epsilon Chapter at the University of Evansville in March. Dr. Chen, Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Evansville, holds professional memberships in the League of American Orchestras, the Conductors Guild, and the College Orchestra Directors Association. He has worked in Miaoli, Taiwan, as the Music Director of the Artist's Chamber Orchestra. His previous conducting positions include the Heartland Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota, the Grinnell College Symphony Orchestra, Iowa's Coe College Symphony Orchestra, and University of Iowa Orchestras. He earned his Bachelor's in Saxophone Performance from Taiwan's Tunghai University, his Master's degrees in Orchestral Conducting from Boston Conservatory and Ithaca College, and his Doctoral in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Iowa. Robert Frampton Robert Frampton was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter in January. Frampton serves as Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts for the Washington Township School District in Gloucester County, NJ. He received a Bachelor's of Music Education from the University of Florida and a Master's in Music Education from Glassboro State College, now Rowan University His career includes 15 years at Triton High School as Band Director. Mr. Frampton is a Past President of the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA) and the Eastern Division of the National Association of Music Education. He served on the Executive Board of the South Jersey Band and Orchestra Directors Association for many years, including stints as Treasurer and President. He also served two terms on the NJMEA Board of Directors. During his term as NJMEA President, Mr. Frampton instituted a state-wide Young Composers Composition Competition in New Jersey. He continues to perform in South Jersey on tuba. Dr. Matthew Herman Dr. Matthew Herman was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Mu Iota Chapter at Western Kentucky University (WKU) in December. Dr. Herman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music. He earned his Bachelor's in Music eory and Composition at the College of Wooster, his Master's in Music Composition from Bowling Green State University, and his Doctorate in Music Composition from Temple University. He previously taught at West Chester University, Montgomery County Community College, and Shenandoah University. He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Music at WKU and was a Visiting Assistant Professor. During his career, Dr. Herman has received numerous teaching awards, including the 2013 Potter College Part-Time Teaching Award. Dr. Herman is an active clinician in music theory and composition pedagogy. His compositions have been performed across the US and Europe and have been featured on several recent CDs. He has honorary memberships with Phi Mu Alpha, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Tau Beta Sigma. Dr. Juliet Hess Dr. Juliet Hess was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Alpha Lambda Chapter at Michigan State University in February. Dr. Hess grew up encompassed by music at home. Her mother was president of the Eta- Iota Chapter at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and a double bassist. Starting at the age of six, her mom instructed her on piano. Dr. Hess graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor's in music and education. She continued at the University of Toronto and received her Master's in Music Education and then her Ph.D., where she focused on the sociological effects of music and the patterns it creates within an elementary education system. Her resume is extensive, including peer reviewing for publications such as Oxford University Press. Dr. Alison Mann Dr. Alison Mann was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Eta Delta Chapter at Kennesaw State University in October. Dr. Mann currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Music and Program Coordinator for Music Education at Kennesaw (GA) State University and conducts the University Women's Choir. She previously served behind the scenes at the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra Chorus and as Director of Choral Activities at Boone High School in Orlando. Beyond the collegiate level, Dr. Mann holds a vast amount of positions at the local, state, and regional level within the arts, including Membership Chair of Georgia American Choral Directors Association and Women's Choirs Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Southern Division American Choral Directors Association. She holds a Bachelor's Degree and Master's in Music Education, Choral, from Florida State University and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Music Education and Choral Conducting from the University of Oregon School of Music. Dr. Mann is a beloved member of the music and education community, sharing her time, talents and vibrant personality with her students and colleagues.
